The dispute surrounding the estate of industrialist Sunjay Kapur, valued at Rs 30,000 crore, intensified on Monday when his mother, Rani Kapur, joined his former wife, Karisma Kapoor, in challenging the legitimacy of his will. Rani Kapur informed Justice Jyoti Singh of the Delhi High Court that instead of mourning Sunjay’s death, which occurred on June 12 in the UK after he accidentally swallowed a bee while playing polo, his wife Priya Sachdev allegedly took steps to assume control over his assets, including purportedly concealing significant information.
As per a report in TOI, Rani Kapur’s legal representative stated that she was not made aware of the will and found it unusual that the document did not mention her, despite Sunjay having publicly acknowledged that he had inherited everything from her. Vaibhav Gaggar, representing Rani, noted that the will contained no indication that Sunjay intended to exclude his mother from inheritance and emphasized that she holds no ownership in the company established by her late husband, which was left solely to Sunjay.
The petition detailed that Sunjay and Priya’s marriage had been troubled since May 2023, characterized by frequent disputes. Rani’s lawyer argued that it was improbable for Sunjay to designate Priya as the sole beneficiary of his personal estate, highlighting his close relationships with all his children, his mother, and other family members.
Priya Sachdev is also accused of failing to disclose certain assets of the deceased in the documents submitted to the court, including paintings, bank accounts, mutual funds, life insurance policies, rental income, and watches.
The case is scheduled for further hearing on December 3. Meanwhile, Sunjay Kapur’s children with Karisma Kapoor have requested an interim injunction to prevent Priya from disposing of their father’s assets and have questioned the authenticity of the will.
